March 2010

Fans of classical architecture, mark your calendars! You’re invited to join the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America for an evening at the Phipps Mansion in Denver. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be followed by a special lecture, “A Classical House is Still a Great Place to Live,” by Gil Schafer III of G.P. Schafer Architect in New York.

Schafer, a Yale-trained modernist who became a classical residential architect, will speak about his journey to practicing an architecture that resonated more with his appreciation of history and his personal experience.

Guests will have an opportunity to view Schafer’s firm’s work and learn how the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America in New York played a critical role in his transformation. He will also discuss how that organization provides a vital resource to architects like him all across the country, who have been unable to acquire formal training in classical or traditional architecture.

The event, which takes place on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, from 6-8 p.m., will be held at the beautiful Phipps Mansion in Denver. For complete details, read on:

We know, we know, we haven’t been blogging as much as we would have liked over the past few days. But we have a good excuse! We’ve been putting the finishing touches on our May/June 2010 issue, which will hit newsstands on May 4.

For the first time ever, in response to your feedback, we’re devoting an entire issue to the subject of remodeling. In it, you’ll find dramatic makeovers, great ideas and fresh new looks for every room in the house—as well as lots of those horrifying “before” photos that are so fun to look at.

Since you still have to wait a month to see what we’ve been working on, we thought we’d pique your interest with a behind-the-scenes look at one of our recent photo shoots. Here, photographer Martin Crabb gets the perfect shot of some of the gorgeous tile on display at the Decorative Materials showroom in Denver. You’ll find all of Martin’s final shots, plus much more in the May/June issue!

The chairs pictured above have created quite a buzz. Many ML readers have written in, asking where to find them.

The answer is, they’re one of a kind. Interior designer Susie Hoffman found the secondhand chairs at an antique shop called Granny’s Attic, in Billings, MT (406-256-5455), then called on the pros at Harold’s Upholstery (Billings, MT, 406-652-2080) to reupholster them in a subtle neutral and vibrant print.

Hoffmann cozied the revitalized chairs right up to a custom fireplace by local metal artisan Dyllon Robertus (406-671-4506), then added area rugs to warm up the room’s industrial doors and polished concrete floors.
