The Denver Art Museum’s Hamilton Building becomes the canvas for Embrace!
If you’ve ever been to—or heard of—the Daniel Libeskind-designed Frederic C. Hamilton Building at the Denver Art Museum, then you’re familiar with its unusual architecture: a series of angled spaces, off-kilter planes and intriguing nooks and crannies. Now, this architecture sets the stage—and literally serves as the canvas—for an all-new exhibit called Embrace! which opened November 14, 2009, and runs through April 4, 2010.
Seventeen artists, each of whom found their own special space within the building, took over the museum with their site-specific creative works. You’ll see a four-story-high painting, digital art that responds to your presence in the gallery, and a room that’s been transformed into a mobile of words, among many other works that inspire. Directed by Christoph Heinrich, DAM’s incoming director and Polly and Mark Addison Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, the show is one of the largest site-specific exhibitions at a U.S. museum. Trust us, it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before—and well worth the trip to Denver.
